“[Michelle] is not my first choice. A lot [of it] depends on luck, the judges’ [preference], the situation, ang gown niya, physical beauty, magaling ba answers niya, talino niya,” Gloria said, ranking Ang tsansa ni Michelle na manalo ng korona ng walo sa 10.

“I always hope that the Philippines will be in the Top 5,” sinabi ni Gloria.

Sinabi pa ni Miss Universe Gloria Diaz, “Sikat na sikat si Michelle. Melanie was not popular in the Philippines, tapos naging super sikat.”

“[M]y personal opinion—which is not to be taken in the negative way—dapat may sarili silang contest. May Mrs. Universe, may Lesbian Universe, may Tranny Universe,” Gloria told the entertainment outlet.

“There is room for so much.

“Mahirap. It’s a very new idea na sa akin… not very acceptable,” Gloria said. “Dapat kanya-kanya! At least it gives people more chances, ‘di ba? Kasi, you’re representing this country.

Kasi dapat may sarili silang contest. Not that I’m ostracizing them, but they are good in some things eh.”

‘Di ba, that’s a big issue ngayon Parang you can never be, you can never be. You’ll always be stronger. So, siya nga ang nanalo sa swimming. Hindi ba that’s all over the internet na it’s unfair?”

“Ang lakas niya, at ang wingspan, ang laki! And then it’s very uncomfortable being in the dressing room with them, ‘di ba, ‘yon,” dagdag niya.

The Philippines inherited the practice and promotion of beauty pageants from the Kingdom of Spain and United States which colonized the country and reflected their keen interest in pageantry through the Santero culture.

The first officially recorded beauty pageant in the Philippines was held in 1908 during the Manila Carnival, which organized both American and Philippine diplomatic relations, with the aim to exhibit achievements in commerce and agriculture. The winner of the beauty pageant competition was crowned, and came to be known, as the “Carnival Queen.” The competitions were held annually from 1908 to 1938.

In 1926, the Manila Carnival conceptualized and held the first national beauty pageant using the title Miss Philippines to represent the Philippine islands; contestants came from all over the country with the following regional titles: Miss Luzon, Miss Visayas, and Miss Mindanao. This new competition gained greater popularity, resulting in the phasing out of the “Carnival Queen” title in 1938

In 1964, Binibining Pilipinas Charities Incorporated, (BPCI) headed by Stella Araneta became the official national franchise holder of the Miss Universe Organization in the Philippines, and has been sending representatives to the Miss Universe pageant since 1964. Its predecessor, the “Miss Philippines”, had been the official franchise holder from 1952 to 1963.

In 1968, the same organization acquired the Philippine franchise of Miss International, and conducted a separate pageant called “Miss Philippines” to select a representative for the Miss International competition. In 1969, BPCI started to combine the Binibining Pilipinas and Miss Philippines competitions and awarded the title “Binibining Pilipinas” to the country’s representative to the Miss Universe competition, while granting the “Miss Philippines” title to the representative for the Miss International competition. For the first time in 1972, both titles “Binibining Pilipinas Universe” and “Binibining Pilipinas International” were awarded to the winners in a single competition.

As Catriona Gray becomes the fourth Filipina Miss Universe, we take a look back at the country’s history with the pageant. The Philippines places much value in beauty and festivities, which is why the Miss Universe pageant garners much attention among Filipinos.

Beatrice was named Miss Universe Philippines in October 2021 – the first winner of the title since the Miss Universe Philippines Organization came together in 2019.

After being postponed several times due to the pandemic, the Miss Universe coronation will be held on December 12 in Eilat, Israel. The winning queen will hold the title of Miss Universe 2021.

Beatrice will be participating in pre-pageant events in the lead up to the coronation. If she wins, she would be the Philippines’ fifth Miss Universe titleholder, joining the ranks of Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, Pia Wurtzbach, and Catriona Gray.

The fixation is not without results. The Philippines has been producing “candidates to watch through the years,” and it is one of the 15 nations with the most number of awards from the competition. Check out the Philippines’ record in the pageant via this infographic produced by VIVAPINAS.COM
