Proposal to abolish NTC, filed in congress

House Minority Leader Bienvenido Abante Jr., the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said the agency was useless.

In filing House Bill 6701, Abante proposed amending RA 7925 or the Public Telecommunications Policy Act, by abolishing the NTC and transferring its powers and mandates to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

All assets, including existing appropriations and money provided by the NTC will be transferred to DICT, and the department secretary may also direct the sale of these properties through public bidding, negotiated sale, lease and more.

According to Abante, he has long considered his recommendation to abolish the NTC because it is useless

“Our NTC, supposedly in charge of regulating and promoting the telecommunications industry has turned out to be one of the most inept and useless agencies whose only relevance lies in being another model for sheer wastage of taxpayer money,” Abante Said

“Its failure all these years to invoke sanctions against the companies poorly serving the people’s telecommunications needs is a perfect reason to abolish it already,” Abante said

Abante filed his proposal yesterday, May 6, a day after the NTC issued a cease and desist order against ABS-CBN.

According to Abante, a slap in the face of Congress was the NTC’s step further and they wrote to the agency, even passing a resolution, for the granting of provisional authority to ABS-CBN.
