Renowned businessman Eduardo “Danding” Cojuango has passed away at age 85, sources said Wednesday. The San Miguel Corporation, where Cojuangco has been chairman and chief executive officer for 22 years, announces the death of a businessman in a stock exchange disclosure.
Tuesday night when Cojuangco passed away, the disclosure said.
Condolences and sympathies were immediately poured out from friends and supporters, business, political and sports, with Cojuangco better known as “Boss Danding.”
“The Palace offers its fervent prayers for the eternal repose of Mr. Cojuangco’s soul as we convey our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, friends, and loved ones,” Malacañang said in a statement by Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.
The Palace recognizes the contributions of Cojuangco and the San Miguel (SMC) to the country.
“In these trying times, Mr. Cojuangco’s SMC has been a reliable partner of the government in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 by providing support and assistance to frontliners and vulnerable sectors,” Roque said.
The 3 senators – Senate President Vicente Sotto III, Sherwin Gatchalian, and Lito Lapid – also members of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), co-founded by Cojuangco, also chanted.
Other senators like Nancy Binay and Joel Villanueva also extended their sympathy.
Former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to Cojuangco, who was close to his father.
“Goodbye, Tito Danding. You were a rock in my life,” said Marcos.
Some basketball players also went to De La Salle University, which Cojuangco supports.
“Despite his health conditions, he has always made us feel his presence and support for the basketball team,” said former Green Archer Jeron Teng.
Under his leadership, San Miguel has become one of the largest food and beverage companies in the country. Eventually it absorbs energy.
Cojuangco was also identified as the crony of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
Cojuangco is behind the Coco Levy controversy, where he allegedly benefited from the tax that has long been imposed on motorists.
Cojuangco was also suspected of murdering Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., his cousin Corazon Aquino.
But Cojuangco’s niece Kris Aquino himself said in 2018 that his uncle had nothing to do with the incident.
Cojuangco flew out of the country when Marcos Sr. was ousted. but returned after 3 years.
In 1992, Cojuangco ran for the presidency under his newly formed NPC.
He was defeated by Fidel Ramos but soon became one of the most influential personalities in politics.
